How to Check for Oral Cancer Symptoms at Home

Oral cancer screenings are an important part of routine dental care, but you don’t have to wait until your next appointment to pay attention to changes in your mouth. Performing a simple oral self-examination at home can help you become familiar with what looks and feels normal for you, making it easier to notice something unusual.

An at-home check shouldn’t replace professional oral cancer screenings, but it can be a helpful habit between dental visits. Here’s how to give your mouth a quick check.

Look for Changes in Your Mouth

Start your self-examination in a well-lit room with a mirror. Wash your hands and remove any dentures or removable dental appliances so you can see your mouth clearly.

Look at the inside of your cheeks, your gums, the roof of your mouth, and the floor of your mouth. Check your tongue, too, including the top, sides, and area underneath it.

As you look, pay attention to anything that seems different from usual. This can include red or white patches, sores that don’t seem to be healing, unusual lumps, swelling, or areas of thickened tissue.

You’re not trying to diagnose anything yourself. The goal is simply to recognize changes that may need a closer look from a dental professional.

Feel for Unusual Lumps or Swelling

Your hands can help you notice changes that aren’t easy to see in the mirror. Gently feel along your cheeks, gums, and the area underneath your jaw for unusual lumps, swelling, or areas that feel different from the surrounding tissue.

You can also gently feel your neck for swelling or lumps.

Try not to worry if you notice something unusual. Many mouth sores, lumps, and other changes have causes that aren’t cancerous. However, persistent or unexplained changes deserve professional attention.

Pay Attention to Symptoms

An oral cancer self-examination isn’t only about what you can see. Notice how your mouth feels and whether you’re experiencing symptoms that are unusual for you.

Signs worth discussing with a dentist or healthcare professional can include a sore that doesn’t heal, unexplained bleeding, persistent pain or tenderness, difficulty chewing or swallowing, a change in your bite, numbness, or a persistent feeling that something is caught in your throat.

If you notice a change that lasts for more than a couple of weeks, schedule an appointment rather than continuing to monitor it indefinitely.

Keep Up With Professional Screenings

Checking your mouth at home can help you become more aware of changes, but it cannot replace an oral cancer screening performed by a dental professional. Dentists have the training and experience to examine areas you may have difficulty seeing yourself and can determine whether a concerning change needs further evaluation.

Regular dental visits also give you an opportunity to discuss any symptoms or changes you’ve noticed since your last appointment.

A few minutes of awareness at home can be a valuable addition to your overall oral health routine.
